Do Prenatal Vitamins Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Many women are either confused about what to look for in fertility vitamins or they don't see the need to take vitamins at all. Let me take some time to explain why vitamin supplements are necessary in order to increase your fertility as well as why prenatal vitamins are necessary prior to and during pregnancy for you and your unborn child. Most women don't get the vitamins and minerals needed from the food they eat from day to day. We would have to eat a whole lot of fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains in order to get the balance of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to thrive and be our healthiest.

Women's vitamins are especially important when a woman is trying to conceive and during pregnancy. These are specifically called prenatal vitamins.

Prenatal vitamins supply a rich assortment of vitamins and minerals to help a woman conceive and bring forth a healthy baby. These vitamins and minerals are necessary to help keep our hormones balanced and our nervous system running smoothly as well as keeping all our organs functioning optimally.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does Prenatal Vitamins make your hair grow faster or is it better to take other vitamins with Biotin in it?
I colored my hair a while back and it broke off a little so i was wondering if Prenatal vitamins make hair grow faster. Im already eating healthy and taking multivitamins but i really need my hair to grow back past my shoulders because i do NOT like extensions. Help me out please!!!

    • ANSWER:
Vitamins, exercise, water, eating right...are all the things that help you obtain healthy hair, but how you take care of it matters as well. Make sure you deep condition/hot oil treat your hair, find the right shampoo that works for your hair texture, get your hair trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks, and lay off heat and chemicals if possible. Your hair needs lots of tender love and care. It will grow, however, just remember the average hair growth is around a 1/2 inch give or take a a little depending on the person.

I'm not a fan of extensions (doesn't sound like you are either), however, if you decide to go that route...make sure they sew or braid the tracks in. NO GLUE!!!!!

  2. QUESTION:

Ever thought she just kinda wondered if it were true that her hair would grow longer? Does that have to be the ONLY thing she's thinking about, just because she wrote the question?
And to answer your question, hon, it's more likely the pregnancy that makes your hair and nails grow. Not the vitamins. During pregnancy you do not lose hair like you normally would each day. So your hair will become thicker at the very least.

      hope that helped :)

  11. QUESTION:
Do Prenatal Vitamins make your hair grow faster?
Is it based off that fact that your healthy or you have crazy hormons? How can I get these if I'm not pregnant?
I eat very unhealthy so Im assumeing it would do me in the benifit

    • ANSWER:
i just got pregnant in january, and i lost my baby last week, i was on prenatal vitamins and my hair grew about 2 inches, and my nails were really long... im still taking prenatal vitamins, and who ever said you shouldnt be taking them if youre not pregnant is retarded, because if i would have started taking them before i got pregnant my baby would have probably had a better chance at life, it didnt develop right because of lack of vitamins in my body, and it is perfectly safe to take them if you arent pregnant. it helps you be healthy for when you do decide to get pregnant. my doctor said i can still take them because i told her about my hair and nails growing, and she said that since i had a d&c after my miscarriage, that i had to wait a month for sex, and 3 months to try to get pregnant again but she recommended i stay on them even if we dont try again right away... they have them at walmart, but i dont know if theyre as good as the kind my doctor gave me, because the ones at walmart dont have omega 3 fish oil in them and that helps your brain develop... but it wont harm you.

  12. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins make your hair grow faster?

  13. QUESTION:
does taking prenatal vitamins really make your hair grow faster?

    do they really work?

    • ANSWER:
      yes...and your nails too!

  14. QUESTION:
Will prenatal vitamins make your hair grow faster if you're not pregnant?
I heard that they did, if so how fast do you think it grows?

    • ANSWER:
I have naturally slow growing hair so I take vitamins to help give it a boost. I take 5000mcg (5mg) of biotin, 5g of msm, and flaxseed oil along with a regular multivitamin. My hair grows twice as fast when I take them. They also make my hair grow in thicker and softer. My eyelashes are so long and so are my nails because of them. A lot of people believe prenatal vitamins promote hair growth because hair sheds less during pregnancy so it gets thicker and longer, so they think, "It must be the vitamins!" but not really. If you still would rather take a multivitamin, try one specifically designed to promote hair growth. Countrylife Maxi Hair worked well for me. Others swear by GNC nourishair. You'll get better results.

  15. QUESTION:
does taking prenatal vitamins actually make your hair grow faster?

Prenatal pills are good for making your hair and nails grow faster.
It contains iron, which is good your hair and also calcium, which is good for you later on in life.
So basically, you are killing two birds with one stone, you are making your hair and nails grow faster and helping out with not having diseases later on in life.
I took them until I ran out of them, and they made my hair grow like a weed.
      It was amazing :)
But then, I stopped taking them and switched to something my mom wanted me to try, just to see if it worked, after I finish this bottle, I'm going back to the prenatal pills.

      Hope I Helped :D

Do prenatal vitamins really make your hair grow faster?
Just wondering. I want it 2 grow faster.

    • ANSWER:
Hey, I am going through the same thing with increasing my hair growth: First let me tell you that PLEASE whatever you do, DO NOT take a high dose of Biotin, because that will give you cystic acne, and it will take about 8-10 months to get rid of... i am still trying to get rid of mine. I cut all my hair off, and I regretted it and I have been doing massive research on things that make hair grow faster. Here are some tips that have worked for me... and I think i am getting about 1 and 1/2 inches in a month which to me is pretty good which is better than the average 1/2. :)

You should take Hair, Skin and Nails. (you can order this online if you don't live in the states.)

      1. Drink plenty of water.
      2. Eat A LOT of fruits and vegetables (this really HELPS a LOT)
      3. Exercise (this gets the blood pumping)
      4. Massage your hair will oil (i used coconut and olive oil)
      5. Get plenty of sleep(6 hours minimum)
      6. Eat your daily amount of protein and a little more.
      7. Use a heat protector if you use ANY kind of heat.
      8. Use a sulfate free shampoo, I have read many articles claiming that Mane' Tail Works, but i used John Freida's Tea Tree Oil shampoo. (you can order this online if you don't live in the states)
      9. Take a multi-vitamin.
      10. Put your head upside down for 2 minutes a day.

You can also apply castor oil to make hair thicker. :)

:) Hope you try a few of them, and you will see a difference SOON, remember DON'T over do them. You can't have long hair over night, unless you get extensions. (:

Also know that your hair and nails are the last to get the vitamins you intake so the hair, skin and nail pill help with that.

Trust me, you will have longer hair soon and when you start working out you will feel better. :)

      Hope this helped. :)

      Good Luck (:

Jojoba oil - This hair oil can be used if your hair type is dry. Jajoba oil will help to moisturize your dry hair when applied on regular basis. It can also be used before shampooing your hair to get a tangle free soft hair.

(Does it do wonder hair growth too if your not pregnant?)

    • ANSWER:
Who told you prenatal vitamins work?

People on YA HAIR, people who sell vitamins, blogs online, people your own age, or people who've had over 4 decades of hair know-how?

Prenatal vitamins don't make your hair grow. Pregnant women have to start taking care of their bodies when they're pregnant, meaning stop smoking, drinking, dyeing or perming their hair SO OF COURSE their hair start growing again. But it has nothing to do with their hair, it has something to do to help the development of their unborn child.
People spend billion per year on vitamins and supplements.  According to Everyday Health, here's an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK.  It is false advertisements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have to approve supplements — no agency in the United States does. So it’s up to consumers to bring health concerns to light. “It’s important to understand the difference between over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements,” say Pieter Cohen, MD, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and instructor at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. The FDA gets involved only after the fact, if the supplement later appears to be causing harm. By that time, the supplement may already have harmed many consumers who used it. “The burden of proof is on the FDA to determine [a supplement] is dangerous and remove it from the market,” Cohen says. Consumer complaints are the primary trigger for investigations. One recent investigation of the dietary weight-loss supplement ephedra resulted in it being banned for sale in the United States.
China, which has repeatedly been caught exporting contaminated products, is a major supplier of raw supplement ingredients. The FDA has yet to inspect a single factory there.

We have identified a dozen supplement ingredients that we think consumers should avoid because of health risks, including cardiovascular, liver, and kidney problems. We found products with those ingredients readily available in store.

Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
Beginning in February 2008, he experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, hair loss, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off.

And no to answer your main question.

You get the strength & all your vitamins & minerals & proteins FREE from the good foods you eat from Mother Nature, not made by man, and no shampoo can help grow hair, not even those made for horses. Horses don't abuse their hair, using heating tools, and they eat better than people, but it won't add more hair & make their hair longer faster.Shampoo intended for animals may contain insecticides or other medications for treatment of skin conditions or parasite infestations such as fleas or mange. These must never be used on humans.

  24. QUESTION:
Should I take prenatal vitamins even though im 14? i hear they make your hair grow fast.?
I know this sounds kind of extreme, even my mother thinks so. I have african american hair mixed in with a bit of almost everything else. My hair is dry, curly, thick, and medium length. Its a little past my shoulders. I want to grow it to a little above my waist. I've been on this site and have read numerous times that taking prenatal vitamins helps your hair grow. Plus it helps with your nails, that's not really a concern though. My hair grows faster than most black people because I have a lot of other races, but it doesn't grow as fast as I would like it to. What should I do to make it grow fast? Will the prenatal vitamins work? Which ones should I get if they do?

    • ANSWER:
      Just take a one-a-day multivitamin.

You're gonna get the same effects only better.

  25. QUESTION:
do prenatal vitamins really make your hair grow faster/longer?
    if not..what does??

    • ANSWER:

  26. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins really help your hair grow faster?
I have heard that by taking prenatal vitamins, even if you are not pregnant, it could help your hair grow faster. I am not sure about this and I was wondering if anyelse has done this. I am scared to try it just yet because I have also heard it could make your breasts grow. I certainly do not want that.

    • ANSWER:
Zinc, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Biotin, & Amino Acids along with a few other vitamins are very important in healthy hair growth. Prenatal vitamins are high in a few of these vitamins which does make it very good for hair growth. All the other vitamins are very good for you as well.

As far as making your breasts grow. I have never heard of that ever!

Another thing that you may want to know...there are some really good products specially made for hair growth. A really good one is called "Shen Min". It has just about every vitamin known for healthy hair. Not only will it help your hair grow but it helps restore your hair back to its original form (color, thickness).

Another thing you could try is "main and tail" shampoo & conditioner. it is very good as well. i use this a few times a week to help my hair grow faster.

Parental Pills are very good for you no matter how you look at it & they will help your hair grow. An actual hair growth formula (like shen min) may be more of what your looking for, plus you wont have to worry about your breasts getting any larger!!

i hope i was able to help you some!

  27. QUESTION:
Does drinking prenatal vitamins make your hair grow fast?
I heard it makes ur hair grow if u drink pre natal vitamins is it true?

    • ANSWER:
Healthy hair growth starts with good nutrition. Your hair needs certain nutrients to grow properly. This can be achieved by getting enough of the right fats, vitamins, and minerals from your diet, or from dietary supplements. There are also some other supplements that may also be able to help, like saw palmetto, Pygeum Africanum, MSM, and grape seed extract. I like Caribbean Hair Grow. You should talk to your doctor before you do, or take anything, and also do your own research (wikipedia, pubmed, etc.) as well. Check out the article link below for some useful information. Hope this helps...

    Have you taken it
    When you were not pregnet?
    an Did it make your
    hair grow faster?

    How much?

    Thanks : ]

    • ANSWER:
Hi there! I just started them a month ago and my hair is healthier, stronger, fuller, and much longer (comparitive than to if I had allowed it to grow naturally without the assistance of these vitamins). The reason is due to the fact that you are getting a large amount of necessary vitamins. Not only does your hair grow, but you all around feel better! You can purchase them super cheap on ebay. The brand I use is "Now prenatal Caps". Good luck.
P.S. Taking these vitamin tablets are a good idea, but they won't allow for maximum hair health and growth alone. Some other factors to consider (if you'd like) are as follows:
-Diet: are you getting an overall balanced diet with lots of protein and fruits and veggies? Don't go crazy (or poor) here by spending lots of time and money. Just make small adjustments in this direction and your entire being will thank you almost instantly! (Actually give it about 72 hours for your body to be able to filter out the remainders of the bad and for your body to stop craving the sugars; it's challenging, but well worth it). The processed sugars are not any good for anyone but the manufacturing company!!!
-Which type(s) of shampoo, conditioner, and styling products are you using? I love "Mane and Tail"; you will get mixed reviews on the use of this product, however, I found it to be absolutely wonderful in accompaniment with my prenatal vitamins. You may also want to try their detangler and shine on sprays to contnue protecting your hair from the elements (esp. sun adn wind) with adding some of the conditioner to your hair. However, since everyone's hair is different, you may want to simply try for yourself and see if it serves your personal needs. if you do not like this product, you may want to try "regenerist" from bumble and bumble. Although advertised for men, it will work wonderfully on everyone! However, be prepared to take out a small loan to be able to afford it on a consistant basis.... : )
      - Do you exercise? This is almost (if not equally) as important as dietary habits. I know how hectic life can be, but try to workout a minimum of an hour three times a week. But, hey, don't stress out over this. If it is not feasible with the way your life is now, no biggie. Just work up to this level slowly, but surely, if you are able.
      - Also, how are you styling your hair? Gels, mousses, hair spray, heat, blow dryers=damage city! Yikes! These will cause weakening of the hair follicules and will not promote growth of any kind. try to lay off of this best as you are able to but still feel good about your hair.
      - Oh man, here comes the one all girls hate: yes, the split ends, you got to be brave and cut them off (never use a razor at the salon- it is a bad idea for your ends). I hate it too! But we girls have got to be brave together and cut them off to allow for our healthy hair to replace these dead ends!
      - How are you shampooing and brushing your hair? this is more important than most think. the key here is to always do everything with your hair as gently as possible. Be good to your hair and be amazed at how good it can be to you.
      - Perhaps you may also want to try scalp massages at night; just every gently massage your scalp with the pads of your fingers in gentle, small circular motions for approximately five-ten minutes.

Ultimately, nothing is a magic pill and time is the true dictator when it comes to how fast one's hair will grow. However, hopefully some of these tips will serve you in your hair growing adventure! I wish you all of the good luck and patience that you will need. I apologize if I gave you too much to read! I really hope that by sharing what I have learned from being in the same boat as you, it will save you time and effort!
      GOOD LUCK!!!!!
P.S. wish me luck too my friend!
P.P.S. Also, I was just thinking about it and here are some ideas that I left out:
      - please refrain from brushing your hair at all when it is wet. If you must, use a wide tooth comb
-aside from the wide-tooth comb to use when hair is wet, invest in a 100%Boar-bristle brush and gently use it as th eonly other brush to comb your hair.
      - do not use super tight rubber bands (especially the ones with metal on your hair if you can). Also, try to avoid braiding it. However, you may want to keep it back in a loose ponytail when you sleep to avoid tangling.
      - Use my favorite hair mask every other week by making a bowl of mayoneise, raw eggs, and avocados and putting on wet hair. Cover with a plastic bag for thrity minutes. You can also put a hot blow-dryer on the plastic bag to speed and intenstify the absorption process (but i would try not to use a blow dryer other than this).
-Do not dye hair, with one exception, and that is to get a professional semi-permanent the same color as your hair. Only do this once and this is optional. However, a semi-permanent can serve to fill in holes in your hair strands and add to it's luster and overall health. I will spare you the chemistry behind this reaction (yes, I am a chemistry geek). Go to your local beauty college to have this done (they are way better than salons because they have the lastest knowledge and are super cheap! They make you sign a disclaimer, however, I have never had a problem with them and my mom has been going to them for over twenty years).
-keep super well hydrated with your H2O!!! Don't go all overkill but do your best.
okay, I'll stop bombarding you now! Sorry, I just wanted to help.

  37. QUESTION:
Vitamins that make your hair grow faster?
So I've noticed my hair just does NOT grow, or if it does, just barely. It's been the same length for ages. I got a trim 2 or 3 months ago and it's about the same length still, if anything a tad longer. My hair goes to around the center of my back and I'm trying to grow it about 2-4 inches. Are there any vitamins that are pretty much guaranteed to make hair grow? Also I heard prenatal vitamins work. Would taking prenatal whilst not being pregnant do any harm to your body? Please and thank you(:

      Hi Hebi,

Can you really make your hair grow faster? The answer is no. The speed of growing is on your genes. But because of different factors our hair does not grow with its maximum speed. If you eliminate things that slow down hair growth, hair will grow faster. What factors slow down hair growth?

      1: Nutrition

      2: Wrong Hair Care

      3: ...

      4: ...

  41. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins really make your hair grow?
how fast did you notice a difference?how much did it grow in a month?looking for some feedback please =]

    • ANSWER:
The best way to get your hair to grow is to focus on your diet. Protein and healthy fats are very important. You can also improve your hair growth with vitamins like biotin, pantothenic acid, Inositol, and MSM. My sister uses prenatal vitamins and biotin for her hair, but I use Caribbean Hair Grow because my hair doesnt grow as fast as hers, and I needed something stronger to get mine to grow. Talk to your doctor before you take any supplements.

Also, check out the article link below for more info about making your hair grow healthier. Good luck!

  42. QUESTION:
Prenatal Vitamins for faster hair growth? What can I do to make my hair grow faster & be it's healthiest?
I've heard that taking prenatal vitamins help your hair grow faster. I've taken Prenatal Vitamins but they make me sick and my Physician told me that taking to Flinstones Gummies is equivalent to one Prenatal Vitamin.

My hair was long but I cut it because it was very damaged because I had it 'Bleached'. So I cut all of the damaged hair off. I'm growing it back out but I want it very long. I'd like to grow it past my waist but not below my butt. I'm mixed: Latin, Native American and African American. I want my hair all natural. No coloring, or anything of that sort. Just the trims that I need.

I understand that good health is the key to growing long hair. What else can I do to make my hair grow very long and be the healthiest it can be?!
    Thanks for all your answers.
My nails already grow like soooo fast. I have to trim them A LOT!
Calcium? I thought it was Protein.

    • ANSWER:
Be gentle to it. No heat, no brushing while wet (use a wide tooth comb) Condition. A lot. You can't undo damage but you can prevent it. Shell out a little money for a deep conditioning treatment. Leave in for ten minutes once or twice a week at least. I know a lot of African American's have trouble with dry hair, so if you have that issue you may want to leave your regular conditioner in for 3 min in the shower as well. Don't brush it too much or put it in tight hair styles, they can cause breakage. Good luck, I hope it ends up gorgeous!

Also, stronger hair doesn't break as much, therefore gets longer faster, not sure if the rate of growth is any different from a normal healthy persons. Take those vitamins.

  43. QUESTION:
Does the vitamin Viviscal really make your hair grow?
It has been written about in articles from Vogue and Cosmo and I have also read some really good reviews about it online. I have been taking hair & nail vitamins and prenatal vitamins for a while but I want my hair to grow faster!

    • ANSWER:
Ask your doctor. From what Ive read and learned hair growth is genetically determined. It grows about half an inch a month so that would be six inches a year. Ive known ppl whove taken biotin pills and said their hair has grown faster but who really knows? Faster than what? Have they ever tracked their hair growth before? Dont get caught up in the hype do your own research and first and FOREMOST: TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. These miracle pills out there have done more harm than their unproven good. The best you can do for yourself naturally is to stay hydrated. Eat lots of leafy anf green vegetable. Lower your fat intake and the like. Talk to your doctor please.

  44. QUESTION:
Will my hair actually grow now that im taking prenatal vitamins?has it worked for you?

  45. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins and hair, skin and nails vitamins really make your hair longer?
[: I want my hair to grow out a little bit faster, will taking these help me?

    • ANSWER:
No. Prenatal vitamins or vitamins like Biotin do not make your hair grow faster. You shouldn't even consider prenatal vit. unless you're pregnant! If it seems that prenatal vitamins make pregnant women's hair grow faster, well it's not the vitamins it's the hormones from being pregnant. Biotin makes your hair stronger, and as such, you might be able to grow longer hair because it's not breaking off.

  46. QUESTION:
Is there a way I can REALLY make my hair grow faster?
When I was pregnant for my 5 year old son, my hair, of course, grew FAST! I've heard conflicting stories: pregnancy hormones caused it/'prenatal vitamins did the trick. Which is true and is there anything out there that can really make your hair grow faster?

  48. QUESTION:
Please Help! (does this make your hair grow?)?
I have been growing out my hair..but I want it to grow faster! I have been asking around and I have heard that taking Prenatal Vitamins makes your hair and nails grow very fast. I am not pregnant and I do not plan to be while I take these. Before I take these vitamins I want to know if they are okay for teenagers and if there are any other side affects that I should know about. Thanks! I am open to all input. [:

    • ANSWER:
Biotin, MSM (Sulfur), Zinc, B-6, Nettle Leaf, Vitamin A, C & D along with a few others make your hair "stronger" but it won't grow your hair faster. I've read many articles on hair growth and there's just not one pill or supplement that you can take that will help you grow your hair faster. Instead of taking Prenatal vitamins why not take one specifically designed for Skin-Hair-Nails. They have all the vitamins and supplements stated above and more. Good luck!

  50. QUESTION:
is it the prenatal vitamins making my hair grow faster?
some ppl say it's pregnancy that makes hair grow thicker and faster...what do you think? Has your hair grown faster before you were pregnant from taking prenatals?

extra info: I'm currently TTC so i could be pregnant right now but i still have couple of more weeks to find out.

    • ANSWER:
I am a cosmetologist, and as part of the curriculum, I have studied this topic. Yes the prenatal vitamins are making your hair grow faster. The folic acid is the key ingredient that causes this, however taking any vitamin will help to make your hair grow faster. But not only is your hair growing quicker... your nails are too, and your skin will be healthier during this time too. This is all because hair, skin, and nails are all made from keratin (protein). Also, being pregnant can too attribute to your hair seeming thicker in density. This is because of your hormones right now, they have slowed down the telogen stage of hair growth (the stage where your hair has stopped growing and begun to fall out). However there is bad news to come... about 3 months after delivering, you will notice you are beginning to lose more hair than normal. This is called postpartum alopecia, and will subside by about 5 months after delivering.
