Do Prenatal Vitamins Make Your Hair Grow

The best hair vitamins for women are useful in ensuring that hair loss is a problem that a woman does not have to face, or, if she is already dealing with that kind of issue, something that she doesn't have to face anymore. Hair is often one of the best accessories that a woman can wear, it is one of the things that can make or break her physical appearance.

A woman's hair is not called her crowning glory for nothing. Having shiny, healthy hair is usually the way to winning smiles and hearts. It's even seen as a manifestation of good hygiene and proper self-care. On the other hand, when a woman has hair that is dry and brittle, people would normally not have such positive thoughts about her. Some would go so far as to think that bad hair is some form of moral crime.

That is the reason why so many women are determined to take care of their hair sometimes, even too much. Hair salons are so popular because they know that any woman is willing to pay the (often outrageous) price for having hair that bounces and sways. Hair treatments are patronized, and hair care is prioritized.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does Prenatal Vitamins make your hair grow faster or is it better to take other vitamins with Biotin in it?
I colored my hair a while back and it broke off a little so i was wondering if Prenatal vitamins make hair grow faster. Im already eating healthy and taking multivitamins but i really need my hair to grow back past my shoulders because i do NOT like extensions. Help me out please!!!

    • ANSWER:
Vitamins, exercise, water, eating right...are all the things that help you obtain healthy hair, but how you take care of it matters as well. Make sure you deep condition/hot oil treat your hair, find the right shampoo that works for your hair texture, get your hair trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks, and lay off heat and chemicals if possible. Your hair needs lots of tender love and care. It will grow, however, just remember the average hair growth is around a 1/2 inch give or take a a little depending on the person.

I'm not a fan of extensions (doesn't sound like you are either), however, if you decide to go that route...make sure they sew or braid the tracks in. NO GLUE!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Geez, give the girl a freakin' break. I would venture to say that she's probably thought about the fact that she actually needs to care for her baby. Ever thought she just kinda wondered if it were true that her hair would grow longer? Does that have to be the ONLY thing she's thinking about, just because she wrote the question?
And to answer your question, hon, it's more likely the pregnancy that makes your hair and nails grow. Not the vitamins. During pregnancy you do not lose hair like you normally would each day. So your hair will become thicker at the very least.

  4. QUESTION:

prenatal vitamins (i hear) are suppose to make your hair grow but its like having the opposite effect on me....my hair is thick and tangled....is this normal?....does this mean my vitamins are not working????my hair has never been like this before...and so DRY!....

    • ANSWER:
it doesnt really make it grow, what it does along with the normal pregnancy horomones make it so not as much hair falls out as usual. so many women do not understand why after they have a baby they think they are losing a ton of hair, but really they are just losing a lot of what hasnt fallen out over the last 9 months. so that is why it is thicker. and it will be dryer because your body is taking so much away from it. you may want to buy some better conditioner for the time being. and maybe do some hot oil treatments. and drink lots of water.

    • ANSWER:
Healthy hair growth starts with good nutrition. Your hair needs certain nutrients to grow properly. This can be achieved by getting enough of the right fats, vitamins, and minerals from your diet, or from dietary supplements. There are also some other supplements that may also be able to help, like saw palmetto, Pygeum Africanum, MSM, and grape seed extract. I like Caribbean Hair Grow. You should talk to your doctor before you do, or take anything, and also do your own research (wikipedia, pubmed, etc.) as well. Check out the article link below for some useful information. Hope this helps...

  16. QUESTION:
Do Prenatal Vitamins make your hair grow faster?
Is it based off that fact that your healthy or you have crazy hormons? How can I get these if I'm not pregnant?
I eat very unhealthy so Im assumeing it would do me in the benifit

    • ANSWER:
i just got pregnant in january, and i lost my baby last week, i was on prenatal vitamins and my hair grew about 2 inches, and my nails were really long... im still taking prenatal vitamins, and who ever said you shouldnt be taking them if youre not pregnant is retarded, because if i would have started taking them before i got pregnant my baby would have probably had a better chance at life, it didnt develop right because of lack of vitamins in my body, and it is perfectly safe to take them if you arent pregnant. it helps you be healthy for when you do decide to get pregnant. my doctor said i can still take them because i told her about my hair and nails growing, and she said that since i had a d&c after my miscarriage, that i had to wait a month for sex, and 3 months to try to get pregnant again but she recommended i stay on them even if we dont try again right away... they have them at walmart, but i dont know if theyre as good as the kind my doctor gave me, because the ones at walmart dont have omega 3 fish oil in them and that helps your brain develop... but it wont harm you.

  20. QUESTION:
Will prenatal vitamins make your hair grow faster if you're not pregnant?
I heard that they did, if so how fast do you think it grows?

    • ANSWER:
I have naturally slow growing hair so I take vitamins to help give it a boost. I take 5000mcg (5mg) of biotin, 5g of msm, and flaxseed oil along with a regular multivitamin. My hair grows twice as fast when I take them. They also make my hair grow in thicker and softer. My eyelashes are so long and so are my nails because of them. A lot of people believe prenatal vitamins promote hair growth because hair sheds less during pregnancy so it gets thicker and longer, so they think, "It must be the vitamins!" but not really. If you still would rather take a multivitamin, try one specifically designed to promote hair growth. Countrylife Maxi Hair worked well for me. Others swear by GNC nourishair. You'll get better results.

  23. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins actually make your hair grow long and pretty?
My mom told me they do, and I really want to grow my hair really long. but if they do, would they be safe to use if I'm not pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
It is mostly a myth that prenatal vitamins = long hair. The reason pregnant women have such thick, fast growing hair because they are producing more estrogen. Estrogen stimulates hair growth and helps to reduce the amount of hair that naturally falls out every day.

Depending on your age, weight, etc., you may be getting too many vitamins if you start adding supplements. A lot of vitamins don't have recommended daily allowances or standards that we're used to seeing on nutrition labels. Usually, if you take too much of a vitamin, your body doesn't absorb it, it just flushes it straight out - so taking prenatal vitamins might just be a waste of money. When it comes to things like this, its always best to check with a doctor.

I don't want to say that vitamins won't help your hair grow at all. Proper nutrition is going to help your hair. If you're worried that you might not be getting all your vitamins to help maintain your health (come on, how many of us really have our 5 servings of veggies a day?) then an all-around multivitamin might be better for you then a super vitamin targeted at pregnant women.

If you want to encourage your hair to grow, read tips online about massaging your scalp, and learn to treat your hair right so it doesn't break! When you start searching online you're going to find a lot of products people are trying to sell to put on your hair to make it stronger. Hair is a bunch of dead protein cells - I don't think that adding a lot of cremes or products is really going to aid in growth.

Currently, my hair reaches the small of my back. I've had hair about this long or longer hair about half of my life (I'm 25), and a lot of it is just treating it right. I never use a blow dryer or a curling iron or anything remotely hot near my head. I use a small pair of scissors to trim away split ends individually so that I don't have to get it trimmed as often. I rarely brush out my hair - instead, I use wide-tooth combs and lots of conditioner for detangling, and I try to massage my scalp daily to keep the blood flowing.

It takes forever to grow hair, but its worth it!

  24. QUESTION:
Prenatal Vitamins; How much faster does your hair grow?
First, do not try to convince me they do not work for hair growth. I know they do, I have been researching brands and effects of prenatal vitamins for a month now, and both of my best friends' mothers are nurses; they have confirmed it's not a myth. I know that the normal growth of hair is 1/2 in per month, but how much faster do prenatal vitamins make your hair grow a month? If you have an answer, thanks for your help. :)

Prenatal pills are good for making your hair and nails grow faster.
It contains iron, which is good your hair and also calcium, which is good for you later on in life.
So basically, you are killing two birds with one stone, you are making your hair and nails grow faster and helping out with not having diseases later on in life.
I took them until I ran out of them, and they made my hair grow like a weed.
      It was amazing :)
But then, I stopped taking them and switched to something my mom wanted me to try, just to see if it worked, after I finish this bottle, I'm going back to the prenatal pills.

      Hope I Helped :D

  27. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins make your hair and nails grow faster?
I really always wondered this question. No I am not pregnant, but I have prenatal vitamins because I was advised that they help with the immune system and make hair growth faster! Is this really true?
Thanks girls :) That did help a lot!!! And I will try the other vitamin!

    • ANSWER:
supposedly, my mom makes me take them (i've never been pregnant!) because they're supposed to give you and your "baby" a lot of extra nutrients that you may not get enough of when you're pregnant, including protein, the same stuff hair and nails are made out of. something that also works pretty well are spirulina pills, which are basically just blue-green algae pills. they sell them at gnc, walmart, and i think sally beauty supply too.

      hope that helped :)

  29. QUESTION:
Should I take prenatal vitamins even though im 14? i hear they make your hair grow fast.?
I know this sounds kind of extreme, even my mother thinks so. I have african american hair mixed in with a bit of almost everything else. My hair is dry, curly, thick, and medium length. Its a little past my shoulders. I want to grow it to a little above my waist. I've been on this site and have read numerous times that taking prenatal vitamins helps your hair grow. Plus it helps with your nails, that's not really a concern though. My hair grows faster than most black people because I have a lot of other races, but it doesn't grow as fast as I would like it to. What should I do to make it grow fast? Will the prenatal vitamins work? Which ones should I get if they do?

    • ANSWER:
      Just take a one-a-day multivitamin.

You're gonna get the same effects only better.

  30. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins really make your hair grow faster?
Just wondering. I want it 2 grow faster.

    • ANSWER:
Hey, I am going through the same thing with increasing my hair growth: First let me tell you that PLEASE whatever you do, DO NOT take a high dose of Biotin, because that will give you cystic acne, and it will take about 8-10 months to get rid of... i am still trying to get rid of mine. I cut all my hair off, and I regretted it and I have been doing massive research on things that make hair grow faster. Here are some tips that have worked for me... and I think i am getting about 1 and 1/2 inches in a month which to me is pretty good which is better than the average 1/2. :)

You should take Hair, Skin and Nails. (you can order this online if you don't live in the states.)

      1. Drink plenty of water.
      2. Eat A LOT of fruits and vegetables (this really HELPS a LOT)
      3. Exercise (this gets the blood pumping)
      4. Massage your hair will oil (i used coconut and olive oil)
      5. Get plenty of sleep(6 hours minimum)
      6. Eat your daily amount of protein and a little more.
      7. Use a heat protector if you use ANY kind of heat.
      8. Use a sulfate free shampoo, I have read many articles claiming that Mane' Tail Works, but i used John Freida's Tea Tree Oil shampoo. (you can order this online if you don't live in the states)
      9. Take a multi-vitamin.
      10. Put your head upside down for 2 minutes a day.

You can also apply castor oil to make hair thicker. :)

:) Hope you try a few of them, and you will see a difference SOON, remember DON'T over do them. You can't have long hair over night, unless you get extensions. (:

Also know that your hair and nails are the last to get the vitamins you intake so the hair, skin and nail pill help with that.

Trust me, you will have longer hair soon and when you start working out you will feel better. :)

      Hope this helped. :)

      Good Luck (:

  33. QUESTION:
do prenatal vitamins make your hair grow?
i've been taking them for about two weeks. are these things good to take even in you're not pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
No, but pregnancy itself can do weird things to your hair, if you are in fact pregnant. Some people's hair gets brittle, or shinier. During my pregnancies I didn't lose any hair at all (like usually in the shower I'll lose some hair, or when I comb it there will be some on the comb). When I was pregnant I didn't lose any, then it came out in handfuls after I had my babies. Weird. And prenatal vitamins are fine to take even if you're not pregnant, but only take one a day because the iron content is so high that you could end up poisoning yourself if you take too many.

  34. QUESTION:
Do Prenatal Vitamins Make Your Hair Grow Faster?

    • ANSWER:
Yes they do, nails also. They also made my nails healthier.

  35. QUESTION:
do prenatal vitamins promote your hair to grow faster?
a few people who have tried taking prenatal vitamins (not while pregnate, or haveing any intentions to become) to help their hair grow faster have told me that, yes the pills help make your hair have a speedy growing lenth, and i was wondering if this was true for anyone else out there.

    • ANSWER:
If you have a healthy diet, and are getting all the nutrients you need from food, then vitamins are unlikely to help.

If you are deficient in a vitamin and you replace it with a supplement, then it could help.

  36. QUESTION:
Do prenatal vitamins really help your hair grow faster?
I have heard that by taking prenatal vitamins, even if you are not pregnant, it could help your hair grow faster. I am not sure about this and I was wondering if anyelse has done this. I am scared to try it just yet because I have also heard it could make your breasts grow. I certainly do not want that.

    • ANSWER:
Zinc, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Biotin, & Amino Acids along with a few other vitamins are very important in healthy hair growth. Prenatal vitamins are high in a few of these vitamins which does make it very good for hair growth. All the other vitamins are very good for you as well.

As far as making your breasts grow. I have never heard of that ever!

Another thing that you may want to know...there are some really good products specially made for hair growth. A really good one is called "Shen Min". It has just about every vitamin known for healthy hair. Not only will it help your hair grow but it helps restore your hair back to its original form (color, thickness).

Another thing you could try is "main and tail" shampoo & conditioner. it is very good as well. i use this a few times a week to help my hair grow faster.

Parental Pills are very good for you no matter how you look at it & they will help your hair grow. An actual hair growth formula (like shen min) may be more of what your looking for, plus you wont have to worry about your breasts getting any larger!!

i hope i was able to help you some!

    • ANSWER:
Who told you prenatal vitamins work?

People on YA HAIR, people who sell vitamins, blogs online, people your own age, or people who've had over 4 decades of hair know-how?

Prenatal vitamins don't make your hair grow. Pregnant women have to start taking care of their bodies when they're pregnant, meaning stop smoking, drinking, dyeing or perming their hair SO OF COURSE their hair start growing again. But it has nothing to do with their hair, it has something to do to help the development of their unborn child.
People spend billion per year on vitamins and supplements.  According to Everyday Health, here's an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK.  It is false advertisements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have to approve supplements — no agency in the United States does. So it’s up to consumers to bring health concerns to light. “It’s important to understand the difference between over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements,” say Pieter Cohen, MD, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and instructor at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. The FDA gets involved only after the fact, if the supplement later appears to be causing harm. By that time, the supplement may already have harmed many consumers who used it. “The burden of proof is on the FDA to determine [a supplement] is dangerous and remove it from the market,” Cohen says. Consumer complaints are the primary trigger for investigations. One recent investigation of the dietary weight-loss supplement ephedra resulted in it being banned for sale in the United States.
China, which has repeatedly been caught exporting contaminated products, is a major supplier of raw supplement ingredients. The FDA has yet to inspect a single factory there.

We have identified a dozen supplement ingredients that we think consumers should avoid because of health risks, including cardiovascular, liver, and kidney problems. We found products with those ingredients readily available in store.

Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
Beginning in February 2008, he experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, hair loss, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off.

And no to answer your main question.

You get the strength & all your vitamins & minerals & proteins FREE from the good foods you eat from Mother Nature, not made by man, and no shampoo can help grow hair, not even those made for horses. Horses don't abuse their hair, using heating tools, and they eat better than people, but it won't add more hair & make their hair longer faster.Shampoo intended for animals may contain insecticides or other medications for treatment of skin conditions or parasite infestations such as fleas or mange. These must never be used on humans.

    hair grow faster?

    • ANSWER:
Hi there! I just started them a month ago and my hair is healthier, stronger, fuller, and much longer (comparitive than to if I had allowed it to grow naturally without the assistance of these vitamins). The reason is due to the fact that you are getting a large amount of necessary vitamins. Not only does your hair grow, but you all around feel better! You can purchase them super cheap on ebay. The brand I use is "Now prenatal Caps". Good luck.
P.S. Taking these vitamin tablets are a good idea, but they won't allow for maximum hair health and growth alone. Some other factors to consider (if you'd like) are as follows:
-Diet: are you getting an overall balanced diet with lots of protein and fruits and veggies? Don't go crazy (or poor) here by spending lots of time and money. Just make small adjustments in this direction and your entire being will thank you almost instantly! (Actually give it about 72 hours for your body to be able to filter out the remainders of the bad and for your body to stop craving the sugars; it's challenging, but well worth it). The processed sugars are not any good for anyone but the manufacturing company!!!
-Which type(s) of shampoo, conditioner, and styling products are you using? I love "Mane and Tail"; you will get mixed reviews on the use of this product, however, I found it to be absolutely wonderful in accompaniment with my prenatal vitamins. You may also want to try their detangler and shine on sprays to contnue protecting your hair from the elements (esp. sun adn wind) with adding some of the conditioner to your hair. However, since everyone's hair is different, you may want to simply try for yourself and see if it serves your personal needs. if you do not like this product, you may want to try "regenerist" from bumble and bumble. Although advertised for men, it will work wonderfully on everyone! However, be prepared to take out a small loan to be able to afford it on a consistant basis.... : )
      - Do you exercise? This is almost (if not equally) as important as dietary habits. I know how hectic life can be, but try to workout a minimum of an hour three times a week. But, hey, don't stress out over this. If it is not feasible with the way your life is now, no biggie. Just work up to this level slowly, but surely, if you are able.
      - Also, how are you styling your hair? Gels, mousses, hair spray, heat, blow dryers=damage city! Yikes! These will cause weakening of the hair follicules and will not promote growth of any kind. try to lay off of this best as you are able to but still feel good about your hair.
      - Oh man, here comes the one all girls hate: yes, the split ends, you got to be brave and cut them off (never use a razor at the salon- it is a bad idea for your ends). I hate it too! But we girls have got to be brave together and cut them off to allow for our healthy hair to replace these dead ends!
      - How are you shampooing and brushing your hair? this is more important than most think. the key here is to always do everything with your hair as gently as possible. Be good to your hair and be amazed at how good it can be to you.
      - Perhaps you may also want to try scalp massages at night; just every gently massage your scalp with the pads of your fingers in gentle, small circular motions for approximately five-ten minutes.

Ultimately, nothing is a magic pill and time is the true dictator when it comes to how fast one's hair will grow. However, hopefully some of these tips will serve you in your hair growing adventure! I wish you all of the good luck and patience that you will need. I apologize if I gave you too much to read! I really hope that by sharing what I have learned from being in the same boat as you, it will save you time and effort!
      GOOD LUCK!!!!!
P.S. wish me luck too my friend!
P.P.S. Also, I was just thinking about it and here are some ideas that I left out:
      - please refrain from brushing your hair at all when it is wet. If you must, use a wide tooth comb
-aside from the wide-tooth comb to use when hair is wet, invest in a 100%Boar-bristle brush and gently use it as th eonly other brush to comb your hair.
      - do not use super tight rubber bands (especially the ones with metal on your hair if you can). Also, try to avoid braiding it. However, you may want to keep it back in a loose ponytail when you sleep to avoid tangling.
      - Use my favorite hair mask every other week by making a bowl of mayoneise, raw eggs, and avocados and putting on wet hair. Cover with a plastic bag for thrity minutes. You can also put a hot blow-dryer on the plastic bag to speed and intenstify the absorption process (but i would try not to use a blow dryer other than this).
-Do not dye hair, with one exception, and that is to get a professional semi-permanent the same color as your hair. Only do this once and this is optional. However, a semi-permanent can serve to fill in holes in your hair strands and add to it's luster and overall health. I will spare you the chemistry behind this reaction (yes, I am a chemistry geek). Go to your local beauty college to have this done (they are way better than salons because they have the lastest knowledge and are super cheap! They make you sign a disclaimer, however, I have never had a problem with them and my mom has been going to them for over twenty years).
-keep super well hydrated with your H2O!!! Don't go all overkill but do your best.
okay, I'll stop bombarding you now! Sorry, I just wanted to help.
      Sarah
